With this long period of cold weather some folks may be entitled to Cold Weather Payments, the qualitfying benefit information about them conflicts depending which of the DWP pages you look at :( If you think you're entitled you can check if your area has had any qualifying periods by entering your postcode on the website below. http://pensions.direct.g...eather-payment/home.asp

Thanks Jo. It annoys me that the DWP only give out these payments to over 60's. Why don't they recognise there are plenty of under 60 people with mobility problems that could benefit from cold weather payments too? Age shouldn't be a qualifying factor, mobility should be! Carol

I agree Carol. I am now over 60 but have no more problems keeping warm than I have had for the last few years with RA. However, having said that, I keyed in my post code and in this area we should have already had 2 payments but I haven't received anything. The criteria for getting the payment is quite confusing. You have to be on pension credit or "premium" DLA, whatever that is.

I haven't had anything either. I thought you had to be on Job Seekers, Incapacity Benefit or Income support. Didn't realise DLA came into it. Does anyone know what "premium" DLA is?

Thanks Jo for highlighting this..although I can't get the link to work.
As far as I know the winter fuel payments are for over 60s and the cold weather payments are different and for those on low income...I may be wrong though. Anyway I don't qualify for either.

There was someone talking about cold weather payments on breakfast TV today. Unfortunately, although he mentioned over 60's on pension credit, he didn't stipulate which other benefits qualified. He did go on to say its a benefit that, if you qualify for it (temperature has to be at least 0 degrees for 7 days in a row), you don't need to apply for it, it is automatically paid to you. Carol

So you have to be over 60 to get the cold weather payment? Isn't that discrimination!!! Still, only 12 years to go........

Hi, I get £25 for every 7 days of 0 or minus temperatures, I think this is because of my Income Support, although I am not sure, sadly at 51 I am too young to get the £400, only 9 years to go love Kimxx

Interesting.. There's a guy on BBC Breakfast at the moment that has just said that people on DLA are entitled to the Cold Weather Payment, earlier Paul from the moneybox program said it was for the means tested benefits. If even they don't know, what chance do we have? it might be worth making some enquiries for anyone on DLA. 2012 Fundraising for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS) http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/RoboJo

Hi,
As far as I am led to believe the cold weather payments are for people on DLA and other means tested benefits. If you go on to the government website and put in your postcode then it will tell you how many weeks you are due. Winter fuel payments are a different thing altogether. The current payment is £25 for a weeks cold weather with temperatures below freezing. In my area we now have three weeks worth of payments. If you want to know more then ring the DWP and check if you are entitled. Hope this helps.
Jayne
Ps When you are on the website put in cold weather payments and it tells you what benefits you need to be on to qualify.

My area qualifies for 4 weeks!
I won't get it though. The way I read it, you have to be on pension credit or income support as well as DLA. It would have been a big help with the heating bill.

That's my understanding of it too Doreen. Our postcode qualifies for 2 weeks but I won't get it either. As you say, it would have been a help..I've had the heating on all day and night non stop all week. I will worry about paying for it later...can't bear to feel cold!

We've had it on day and night too, you daren't leave it off during the night when it's forecast minus 8 to 14 . I've had to have the gas fire on too, and we rarely use that, don't normally need it with the heating on. Definitely not looking forward to the bill!

hi Jo,
I also saw the bit on breakfast.
I have now looked it up and it is very confusing AND I am still none the wiser.

I might get some as I am on Incapacity and DLA.
But we dont get anything means tested as Richard earns (not much) .
